The City of Dumaguete
is a city in Negros Oriental. It is the capital and largest city in the province. According to the 2007 census, it has a population of 116,392 people.
Dumaguete is a university town with seven universities and colleges. The city is best known for Silliman University, the countrys first Protestant university and the first american university in Asia. There are 12 elementary and 9 high schools. The student population is around 30,000.
The city attracts a lot of foreign tourists, particularly Europeans, because of easy ferry access from Cebu City, the availability of beach resorts and dive sites and the attraction of dolphin Watching and whale watching in nearby Bais Bay.
The city also has a domestic airport which provide daily flights to and from Manila and Cebu City, via Cebu Pacific, Air Philippines and Philippine Airlines.
